- Come on Rob, just a little bit of hyperbole, heh? :-)
-
- Actually, there is a lethargy in upgrading memory for two reasons.
- Most folk, even with new machines, who have 8 megs have memory boards
- populated with 8 one meg simms. to upgrade to sixteen is not a simple
- matter of adding 8 more megs. Upgrading means pulling out 4 or more
- of ones simms and then adding the add tion 16 (note many systems will
- require 16 megs to be purchased since you cannot mix memory within
- banks). So you're left with at least 4 useless simms and 16 to 24
- megs of memory.
-
- Couple that with the ridiculously high, artificially so in some folks
- estimation, price of memory and you can see the resistance to change.
- It might be easy to do a small shop.... but think of doing several
- thousand computers. Much harder.
-
- Actually, IMHO the OS wars, although seemingly over, could turn into a
- real WILD horse race if either OS/2 or Win95 had a half-dozen gifted
- ASM programmers optimizing it for speed and to run like wind on 4
- megs. Heck, I remember multi tasking very smoothly on mainframes with
- 64k (note: not 64 megs) back in the 70's. Of course the architecture
- was quiet different, but its amazing what a really competent ASM
- programmer can do. :-)
